MUSICAL THEATER
The annual school musical is a treat beyond compare. A collaboration among the dance, theater, and chours programs, this opportunity is open to ALL students across grades. Auditions take place in November. The show is in March. Rehearsals are after school (and during some lunch periods). There are many ways to get involved, from acting to stage design to managing stage lights. It's a wonderful show that is sure to delight, especially because students are such talented singers, dancers, actors, and theater technicians.
An important aspect of the mustical is exposing students to three primary eras of the Broadway musical - Early, Golden Age (1940's - 1960's), and Modern. These categories build student knowledge about and appreciation for musical theater within a historical and cultural context. School productions over the years:
2015 - Annie
2014 - Guys & Dolls (Golden Age)
2013 - Pirates of Penzance (Early)
2012 - Grease (Modern)
2011 - Anything Goes (Golden)
2010 - Oliver
2009 - Annie
2008 - 20th Century Broadway Review
2007 - Little Shop of Horrors (directed by Missy Hart)
Audition Preparation
Interested students sign up to participate in a three-part audition that involves ACTING for Ms. DiRienzo; SINGING for Dr. Musick; and DANCING for Mr. Kerr. For the audition, students:
-
Should prepare by watching, listening to, and reading as much as they can about the current musical! Prepared students will know the main characters; the general plot points and storyline; have the songs already in their head; and have a grasp of the context in which the musical is created- basically, the "who, what, when, where, why and how" of the musical.
-
Receive all audition materials at the audition (they don't need to bring anything but desire and a willingness to work hard!)
-
Wear comfortable clothing to audition and be prepared to "sweat!"
